Birmingham brilliance at the 2025 BUCS Awards
In the year of our 125 anniversary, the 2025 BUCS Awards gave national recognition to the outstanding talent, dedication and spirit that make sport at the University of Birmingham so special. From individual brilliance to team triumphs, our student athletes delivered standout performances across the board.
There was no need for us to feel paranoid at the ceremony either, as Birmingham walked away with two of the three awards we were shortlisted for. Once again, we showed that Birmingham is truly leading the field.
Ollie Morgan crowned Sportsman of the Year

Another day, another trophy for Ollie Morgan — Birmingham’s very own iron man in the pool.
Fresh from another outstanding season in the pool, Ollie Morgan is flying high again and was named BUCS Sportsman of the Year. This prestigious national award recognises his achievements both in and out of the water. Ollie is not only a multiple BUCS gold medallist but also a senior international swimmer for Great Britain, continuing to break boundaries while studying and training right here at Birmingham.
From representing Team GB at the World Aquatics Championships to inspiring the next generation through coaching and mentoring, Ollie continues to set the standard for what it means to be a student athlete. Is there anything he cannot win?
Tennis named BUCS Club of the Year

Serving up success across the board, our Tennis Club won BUCS Club of the Year. This incredible achievement reflects a year of growth, inclusion and performance underpinned by a never say die attitude. With more teams than ever competing at BUCS level and a thriving social tennis scene on campus, the club has built a reputation for excellence and energy.
Off the court, the Tennis club have made huge strides in promoting inclusivity and encouraging participation for all. The award is not the result of a shot in the dark, but because of their community work, commitment to development and changes they have made make them a standout example of what student sport can achieve.
Recognition for our inclusive sport programmes
We were also proud to be shortlisted for the BUCS Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award, thanks to the ongoing success of our Active Residences programme. This scheme brings sport and activity right to students’ doorsteps, helping hundreds of students build connections and confidence through movement.
While we didn’t take home the trophy this time, the shortlisting reflects how seriously we take our responsibility to make sport accessible, inclusive and welcoming for every student on campus.
A winning year for Birmingham
These national accolades follow a standout season for University of Birmingham Sport. We finished 6th overall in the BUCS league table and celebrated our strongest ever season across multiple sports. From team titles and individual triumphs to community impact and leadership, Birmingham students continue to inspire at every level.
We could not be prouder of our athletes, clubs and supporters for everything they have achieved during this crazy train of a year.
Let’s keep pushing boundaries and building something even bigger next season.
